This book is brutal, yet the author asks you to empathize with the main character, even occasionally using the pronoun “you” in place of “I” to insert the reader into the character’s perspective.

Just finished translating it in Urdu. I was fine with the gory bits though they did make me cringe. A brutal and often unsettling book with a neat concept a story from a rat’s perspective but it has no plot to speak of.

I also agree with other reviewers that, as a rat owner, it is hard to believe a novel about rats in which the r I had mixed feelings about this book. To tell you the truth: Feb 03, Natalie rated it did not like it.

Perhaps it’s due to the translation from the original Polish, or just a literary technique Zaniewksi can’t understand. The author is a Polish poet and he says he wrote the novel as a crusade for rats. Recommended to Mariel by: Published first published Neoekspresionizam u punom sjaju. Dakle, ni radnja, ni mesto, ni vreme nisu bitni u ovom delu. He describes the places he has lived and his travels, including one in a ship which takes him to a country at war. I think it makes zanjewski most sense after you’ve read the book and gotten to some of the more metaphorical or delusional parts, where the rat isn’t quite sure what is happening or if anything is real or if it’s dying or if its eyes are open or if it even has eyes.

If I ever reread this, it will have to be the English translation, because not really digging the Finnish one. The prose lives on the surface, concerning itself with the details of a rat’s lived life that accumulate into a story.
